Culture and Social Activities

Culture

Perth was founded in 1829 by free British settlers. Perth's multi-cultural society is a result of migration form Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Australia's indigenous people have also contributed to the rich cultural fabric that exists in Western Australia.

Western Australians are famous for their warm hospitality to overseas visitors. They are friendly, welcoming, enjoy meeting people from other cultures and love sharing food and conversation. In daily life, Perth people are quite informal. First names are often used, even in business.

The various communities live in relative social harmony, with equal rights for all. There is legislation prohibiting discrimination based on gender, race, or disability. If anybody's behaviour or words make you feel uncomfortable, talk immediately to the staff at your institution. They are committed to providing a safe environment for you and trained to deal with any difficulties.

Sexual harassment and gender discrimination are unlawful and unacceptable in Australia. Even job advertisements must be neutrally worded. Workplaces and education institutions have clear guidelines to prevent and deal with sexual harassment of any kind.

Social Activities

Cultural and social activities are plentiful, with galleries, concert halls, theatres, and cinemas available in abundance. There is also a world-class casino. Warm summer evenings often mean that cultural experiences can often be enjoyed under the stars. A cosmopolitan mix of restaurants, pubs, clubs, markets, and festivals is available all year round. Quite simply, there is something for everyone.
