Climate

Perth has a Mediterranean climate with warm to hot dry summers and mild wet winters. Leafy and expansive, the city has an enviable reputation for cleanliness and safety. Western Australians love the outdoors, and who can blame them when they've got so much of it! Beaches and marinas compete with national parks, lakes, rivers and country drives for weekend outings. With Perth's sunny climate, entertainment is often enjoyed throughout the year around private backyard swimming pools and barbecues.

Clothing

In keeping with Perth's relaxed lifestyle, dress is informal on most occasions. Clothing and hairstyles are similar to those in any other western country. Most families wear shoes inside their house, but some people prefer to leave their shoes at the door.

Keep covered in winter and summer

For winter, you'll need:

• warm footwear for wet weather
• woollen sweaters or other warm garments
• a windproof jacket or waterproof coat

In summer, you'll need:

• a sunhat or cap
• a long-sleeved shirt or blouse made of cool fabric
• suitable footwear for outings to the beach and the bush
