Accomodation
A variety of high standard student accommodation is available to suit different budgets and needs. Normally secondary school students must live in a homestay or in the boarding facilities at the school. Older students can opt to live in on-campus accommodation, with an Australian family or in shared rental accommodation with other students or friends.
Help provided
All Western Australian educational institutions provide students with help in finding accommodation and understanding contracts such as leases and tenancy agreements.
Types of accommodation
The more common accommodation arrangements are:
- Homestays: Accommodation where students live with an Australian family for all or part of their study period. It is an opportunity to learn conversational English, and experience first-hand the friendly Western Australian lifestyle and culture.
- Rented houses/rooms: For many students, the desire for independence leads to rental accommodation. Often it allows students to share with friends or other students, and collectively meet their living expenses.
- Boarding facilities: Many private and some secondary high schools provide on-campus accommodation for international students. These usually provide shared facilities along with meals and laundry services. Several colleges in Perth have student villages for senior secondary students.
- University Residential Colleges/Halls of Residence: Owned by the university, both provide accommodation, meals and related services for full-time university students. Residential colleges are usually more expensive and provide a broader range of services, but these vary across institutions.
- Other: Accommodation categories include university, college and private apartments, hostels, guesthouses and hotels.
